The United States holds 11 venues, capped by the Final at MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey. Major hubs like Miami, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Houston see heavy airline competition and are typically the lowest-cost US entry points. Most venues are high-capacity NFL stadiums adapted for soccer, with capacities of 60,000 to 82,000.

Pre-Departure Planning

Travel Basics

Visa & Entry
A $21 ESTA is required for Visa Waiver Program citizens, applied online at least 72 hours before departure. For non-VWP nationals a B1/B2 tourist visa is required, and processing typically takes weeks. Apply early — tournament-period demand will be very high.
Most travelers can enter visa-free for up to 180 days. You'll get a tourist permit (FMM) on arrival, or you can complete it online before flying. For trips that mix Mexico and US matches, get entry permits for each country individually.
Travelers from visa-exempt countries need an eTA ($7 CAD, online application). Where a full visa is required, submit the application early. Approval is usually quick — but slows when major events drive demand. Your eTA is tied to your passport and remains valid for 5 years.
Currency & Costs
Currency: US Dollar (USD). Credit and debit cards work almost everywhere. Tipping is the norm: 18-20% in restaurants, $1-2 per drink in bars. Casual-restaurant meals run $15-25; fast food is $8-15. Inside the stadiums, food and drinks are markedly pricier.
The currency is the Mexican Peso (MXN). US dollars are commonly accepted near tourist sites, though peso payments get better rates. Plan on tipping 10-15%. Meals at local restaurants run $5-10, putting Mexico at the top for budget-friendliness. ATMs are widely available.
Canadian Dollar (CAD) is used. Cards, including contactless, are accepted across the board. 15-20% is the standard restaurant tip. Costs sit near US levels: budget $15-25 per meal. Pay attention — Canadian displayed prices are tax-exclusive, so total cost arrives 13-15% above the listed menu price.
Weather (June-July)
Expect big differences city-to-city. In the south — Miami 32°C, Houston 35°C, Dallas 36°C — it's hot and humid. West Coast venues (LA 25°C, San Francisco 18°C, Seattle 22°C) are noticeably milder and drier. The East Coast runs warm and humid: New York 29°C, Philadelphia 30°C, Boston 27°C. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and water for outdoor stadium matches.
Rainy weather sets in from June. Because Mexico City is at 2,200m, daytime tops out near 25°C and evenings cool down hard. Layers plus a rain jacket are recommended. In Guadalajara and Monterrey expect 30-33°C and higher humidity. Afternoon thunderstorms happen often but tend to pass quickly.
The country's prime weather season. Around 26°C is typical for Toronto, with occasional humid stretches. Vancouver averages 22°C, sees up to 16-hour days, and gets little rainfall. Outdoor events feel comfortable in either city. Light layers are recommended for evening kickoffs.
Practical Info
Type A/B sockets, 120V. English is the main spoken language. Ride-hailing via Uber and Lyft covers every host city. Most hotels, cafes, and airports provide free WiFi. An eSIM or airport-bought prepaid SIM handles mobile data. Public transport runs the gamut — strong in New York, weak in Dallas and Houston.
Power: Type A/B plugs at 127V (US-compatible). Spanish is the primary language though English is widely understood in tourist areas and near stadiums. Uber and DiDi operate reliably in all three host cities. Telcel or AT&T Mexico SIMs at the airport keep data and calls cheap.
A/B plugs, 120V — same as US. Toronto: English. Vancouver: English/French. Uber is available in both cities. Transit is reliable; Toronto TTC and Vancouver SkyTrain each link to their stadium. Mobile plans in Canada are costly — visitors should look at an eSIM or prepaid SIM.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Qatar Airways the obvious choice from Doha to World Cup 2026?

No other carrier anywhere in the world offers twelve non-stop US destinations from its home hub. Nine of those twelve are World Cup host cities (JFK, LAX, SFO, BOS, DFW, IAH, MIA, ATL, ORD, IAD, DTW, PHL — with NYC/MetLife, Philly, Miami, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, LA, Boston serving as host venues directly). That eliminates the need for any connection for the vast majority of match trips. Qatar Airways holds OneWorld elite status reciprocity with American Airlines, so Privilege Club tier status carries through domestic US flights if a connection is needed to Kansas City or Seattle. The QSuite business class is consistently rated the world's best business product on long-haul.

Do Qatari citizens need visas for the USA, Mexico or Canada?

Yes for the US and Canada. The US B1/B2 requires a DS-160 and in-person interview at the US Embassy in Doha, with a USD 185 fee and current wait times of 2 to 4 months for first-time applicants — fast compared to other regional embassies. Canada requires a Temporary Resident Visa through the Doha VAC, typically processed in 30 to 50 days. Mexico allows Qatari passport holders entry for up to 180 days without a consular visa if they hold a valid US, Canadian, UK or Schengen visa; otherwise apply at the Mexican Embassy in Abu Dhabi (Doha does not have a Mexican consular mission).

Which US host cities are NOT served directly from Doha?

Of the 11 US World Cup venues, Qatar Airways flies direct to all major hubs. Kansas City (MCI) is the one host city that requires a connection — typical routing is DOH to ORD or DFW, then American Airlines or Southwest onward to MCI. Seattle is also not a direct QR destination, so for any knockout games there, route via LAX, SFO or ORD. For all other US matches — New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Atlanta, Miami, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles — Qatar Airways connects direct from Doha.

How should I plan a multi-city World Cup itinerary from Doha?

Qatar Airways' density makes open-jaw bookings genuinely affordable. A common pattern is flying Doha to New York for a group-stage match, then domestic US flights on American or JetBlue between match cities, then returning from a different US city back to Doha. Qatar Airways allows open-jaw bookings on the same ticket with no penalty beyond fare differences. Privilege Club members get free Doha stopovers of up to 96 hours included in the fare, which works both directions — useful for fans who want to break up the return journey.

What is the unique experience of traveling from Qatar having just hosted 2022?

Qatari fans have a distinctive perspective — many volunteered or worked during 2022 and now experience the other side of the tournament. Hamad International's World Cup 2022 legacy infrastructure (expanded immigration halls, stadium transit logistics, Fan ID coordination lessons) translates to better Doha outbound processing. Supporter groups from the 2022 Qatari team era remain active, and local federations (QFA) are expected to allocate traveling supporter tickets through registered club membership. Expect Qatari flags and ghutrah to appear in New Jersey and Los Angeles supporter sections in significant numbers.

What about travel insurance and healthcare cover?

Qatar's national health scheme (Hamad Medical Corporation) does not cover treatment abroad, and US medical costs can exceed QAR 200,000 for a single emergency admission. Buy travel medical insurance with at least USD 100,000 emergency medical and USD 500,000 evacuation cover — local providers QLM, Qatar Insurance Company, and AXA Gulf all issue suitable World Cup-era policies. Check the policy explicitly names the USA, Mexico and Canada. For premium-cabin ticket holders, Qatar Airways' Privilege Club Platinum and Diamond tiers include baseline travel insurance that covers medical emergencies during flights and layovers — read the terms, because it does not always extend to on-ground match travel.
